Researching successful New Zealanders
This afternoon we spent some time in groups researching about successful New Zealanders. We have been learning how to use key words to find out the most important pieces of information from what we read and write about the facts in our own words. We used internet sites and books to search for new information.

Writers Club Adventures
The writer's club went on the Taieri Gorge Train. First we went to the Early Settlers Museum to see Josephine. Then we went to get our tickets from the Dunedin Railway Station. On the way to get the tickets we saw the most beautiful glass stain window of a steam train. We went and found our carriage. It was carriage D. I had to wait patiently for the train to move. Then Joe the train guard came around getting our tickets so he knew that we had paid. My favourite part was standing outside in the cold, gloomy, dark tunnels. The longest tunnel was 1.5 Km long. It was the best day ever!

Handwriting
Everyone has been focusing really hard during handwriting time to make improvements with our shape, size, space, slope, speed and fluency in our handwriting. We try very hard everyday to achieve our goals and achieve a 3 star!
Dumplings with Cathy!
Today we all had a go at making a dumpling! First we had to roll the dough into a little ball and then stretch it out in our hands so that it makes a flat circle. After that we spooned in the filling and closed it up into a half moon shape. We learnt that the Chinese make their dumplings into this shape because it is a symbol for money and if you eat the dumpling it can bring you success and money. Finally we boiled our dumplings in a big pot before tasting them. Some people thought they were delicious! Thank you Cathy :)

Learning in our class today
Here are some snapshots from class today. We were lucky to have Cathy teach us some mandarin for half an hour this morning. We had fun doing some chinese exercises and completing a "who wants to be a millionaire quiz" which challenged us to think about what we have already learnt in mandarin lessons. We enjoyed learning some cricket skills with the sports activator before focusing on our reading and writing.
Autobiographies and Biographies
We have begun learning about autobiographies and biographies so that when we learn more about successful New Zealanders we can begin to write biographies about them. An autobiography is when you write about your own life. Today in class we helped Miss Hubac to use her photos to plan her autobiography. We made sure we put the events in chronological order (order that they actually happened in). Here is the plan and tomorrow we will be able to read her autobiography. Remember to bring your own photos along so you can begin creating your plans on Friday!

A - Z Holidays
During writing time last week Room 6 worked hard on creating an A-Z of their school holidays. It was very challenging for the students to think of sentences about their holiday beginning with each letter of the alphabet. We have been publishing these pieces of writing in a variety of ways. As we finish we will be displaying them on the writing section of our blog, make sure you take a look!

Welcome back to Term 4
Hi everyone
Welcome back to Term 4, it was fantastic to see all of the children today and hear about some of the things they have been doing over the past couple of weeks.
The children all seemed happy to be back and I was very impressed with how quickly they settled back into the classroom routines.
Topic
For the first few weeks of this term we are going to be learning about successful New Zealanders from the past and present. If you have anything at home that would help us with this topic it would be great if you could send it in with your child. Some of the children may like to spend some time at home looking up some facts about famous New Zealanders to bring along to school to help with their reading activities.
Hats
Since we are back into a summer term it is compulsory for your child to have a hat on when they are outside. Please make sure your child has their hat at school every day this term.
Maths
During maths this term we are going to be focusing on fractions, decimals, multiplication, and division. Remember it is really important that your child practises the basic facts they are given each week for their homework. Knowing these facts off by heart is very important and will help them to learn strategies for solving problems with larger numbers. Please feel free to come and see me if you would like any help with supporting your child at home with their maths.
Also remember that there are some links to useful math sites on the maths page of this blog.
Reading
Most of the students have been very good at completing their homework every night. It is very important that your child reads every night. It is also a great idea to ask your child some questions about what they are reading as they read to you because this helps them to practise their comprehension skills which are very important at this level.
Spelling
Each night the children have a different activity to complete for their spelling homework. Please make sure your child completes these each day and if they miss an activity they will be able to complete it the following night.
As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Calendar Art
Today we worked on our kiwiana art! We are creating paintings that can be turned into calendars for our friends and families. It has been very tricky trying to use a paintbrush to add detail to our pictures.

Marae Visit
Room 6 had a fantastic visit to the marae on Thursday. It was very special to be welcomed onto the marae and we really enjoyed learning some different skills while we were there. We were able to have a go at flax weaving, poi, maori games, martial arts with the rakau, and we listened to some great stories!

Cross Country
We had a great day at the cross country! I was really impressed with all the children who tried their best and pushed themselves to their limits. Room six had some great results. Congratulations to all of the students who made it through to the South Otago Champs!
Mount Cooee Trip
We went on a trip with Room 3 to the Mount Cooee Landfill and the Salvation Army store. We learnt more about how to reduce, reuse, and recycle rubbish and why it is important. Check out our writing blog to read about our exciting trip.
